Cover Story Text: Lloyda Nicholas
He’s worked with some of the top names in the business, from Johannesburg to London, Paris and New York; written extensively about them; and has even had occasion to dress quite a few of them for photo shoots.
Names like Iman; Beverly Johnson; Naomi Campbell; Alek Wek; Tyra Banks; Jaunel McKenzie; Carla Campbell; Lene Hall; and Tenille Stoute come readily to mind, and even list among the close friendships he has cultivated over the years.
For the fashion-conscious amongst us from the ‘60s era, the name Walter Greene evokes fond memories of a bygone age of Guyanese pride, glamour and glitz.
Bold and feisty, Walter created quite a stir in local fashion circles back in 1968 when 20-year-old Alexis Harris, who went on to place sixth at the Miss World pageant later that year, was crowned Miss Guyana wearing one of his fabulous creations. Ok! I admit that I’ve never seen this gown, but, there must have been something exceptional about it, as my own mother has not stopped gushing since about it.
