COVER STORY

3-Time Carib Soca Monarch

By Lloyda Nicholas

The Sweet soca vibes were encouraging Guyanese to lift their flags high and be proud to be 100 percent pure Guyanese. It was certainly the right note to hit for one of Guyana’s leading recording artiste and three time Soca Monarch, Adrian Dutchin. The diminutive firehouse of energy and passion has consistently set himself apart from other performers in Guyana. It gives us something to shout about when he sings in his winning performance, “Anywhere I go, no matter what I do I am always representing you.”

It’s quite a representation indeed, since Adrian started out as a wannabe rhythm and blues singer with a group called Seven, and has since evolved into a force to be reckoned with on the soca music scene. Currently performing with regional sensation, the Krosfyah Band, real stardom for him began after he hooked up with Jomo Promo, a soca star in his own right to form the dynamic X2. Hits like, “You drive me crazy and Tic Toc have made the duo a household name and launched Adrian’s solo career.

GEM had the privilege of rapping with this rising star just before the 2008 soca monarch competition, and was treated with a sneak preview of his song “No Place Like Home”. Although we are no music experts, we knew that the king was here to reclaim his crown after being dethroned by contender Malo in 2007, while trying to capture the top prize three years in a row. click here to subscribe
