The whole concept of a magazine for Guyanese formulated in 2002. Founder and publisher Mr. Simeon Corbin returned to Guyana for vacation, and
observed that popular media was focused mostly on the negative things going on in the country. There was a definite void in entertainment, culture, fashion, travel and lifestyle reporting in Guyana.
Crime and punishment got the headlines daily, despite the fact there were many exciting entertainment-related events taking place on a regular basis.
He also noticed that in cases where some of the events were reported, the kind of candid coverage was lacking.
These observations were discussed with some of his friends in the local media. He suggested there should be a publication that focuses only on positive people, places and events. Some of his friends were sceptical, while others liked the idea.
Upon Mr Corbin's return to the USA, he continued to toss the idea around
with family and friends, and soon realized that his vision was developing into a full publication.
The final decision was made that not only will the magazine have entertainment related features, but it will also include
travel, culture, fashion and lifestyle topics. In addition, to broaden the appeal of the magazine, certain controversial topics such as politics, race, religion and class will not be part of the magazine's editorial schedule.
Two years later on January 30, 2004 at the Tower Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana, the Guyana Entertainment Magazine (GEM) was launched. In the audience were family, friends, members of the business community and the media.
GEM is a full colour glossy magazine that is 8 1/2" X 11" in size. It is published in Guyana every two months: February, April, June, August, October and December. The magazine is filled with world-class photos, fascinating features and thought-provoking columns.
Every two months, the beat of the country and its diaspora is chronicled through extensive coverage of people, places and events. Also included in this package are highlights from recent entertainment events, a comprehensive calendar, club listings, tasty recipes, a feature on a Guyanese icon, spotlight on a non-government organization, GEM Beauty & GEM Hunk and many other exciting regular columns.
The magazine transcends race, politics, religion and class to showcase the Guyanese way of life in a positive, simple and fun way. Our constant goals are to entertain, educate and inspire our readers in every issue.
